How do travellers behave during disasters?
A transport perspective on measuring, modelling and controlling emergencies

Cities and societies across the globe are confronted with hurricanes, wildfires and flooding, often having large-scale and severe impacts. When dealing with such disasters, the transport infrastructure plays a crucial role throughout the preparation, evacuation and recovery phases. This seminar brings together a number of international experts, all working in the field of transport, but having different backgrounds and hence elaborating on the various aspect of this subject. The presentations cover hurricanes, wildfires and flooding, and include human response (of both citizens and authorities) to threats and disasters, people’s evacuation choices, evacuation traffic flows and effects of information and control measures thereon, as well as important dynamics and interactions between the disaster situation and evacuation process. Also, the speakers draw insights from both the analysis of past events as well as research studies. The seminar closes with opportunity for a discussion, to elaborate on links between the presentations and other cases coming from the audience.
