On the 30th of September 2019, TRAIL PhD researcher Xiao Liang will defend her PhD thesis “Planning and Operation of Automated Taxi Systems” at Delft University of Technology. The defence is public, and you are invited to join. Moreover, on the occasion of this public defence, TRAIL and TU Delft have set up a seminar on optimization for transportation problems with the following contents.

09.30 – 10.00     Prof. dr. Antonio Antunes (University of Coimbra)Intermodal Terminal Network Planning: Centralized vs. Decentralized Management
Intermodal terminals are the facilities where cargo is transhipped between different transport modes. The planning of these facilities can be made through optimization models (of the hub location class). In this presentation, we address two cases: the case of centralized management, i.e., a single entity decides how terminals will be placed and operated; and the case of decentralized management, i.e., when the location and the utilization decisions are made by different entities.

10.00 – 10.30     Prof. dr. Niels Agatz (Erasmus University)Please Bring Me Home: Operating Strategies for Designated Driver Services
Designated driver services bring people home in their own cars when they might be too impaired to drive. We study the costs — in terms of distance and emissions — of different operating strategies for designated driver services and compare these to the costs of a regular taxi. To model the designated driver problem, we present a mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation to generate optimal, least cost routes for the company vehicles and the designated drivers.

10.30 – 11.00     Dr. Kun An (Monash University)Planning of Station-Based One-way Electric Carsharing Systems with Continuous State of Charge Functions
Station-based one-way electric carsharing systems are providing an emerging travel mode. This study presents a method to determine the deployment of such carsharing services with electric vehicles in a region to maximize the total profit for the operator. A Mixed Integer Non-linear Program model is built, in which the strategic planning level decides the fleet size and the stations’ capacity, and the operational level decides on needed relocation operations.
