PhD researcher from the Technical University of Braunschweig (TUBS), Simon Söser, will talk about railway operations fundamentals at Delft University of Technology.
Nowadays, it is becoming crucial to understand how trains operate to discover the background of train movements on the railway track. In this seminar, the basics of railway operation will be presented with various operating procedures.
Current signalling systems, track gauges and power supply systems in the European Union will be presented. The associated blocking time in fixed block systems will be explained, followed by timetabling design in current railway systems.
The European Train Control System (ETCS) is trying to harmonize signaling systems in the European Union. With ETCS, interoperable train traffic should be provided. More insight will be given about the associated challenges of ETCS.
Simon Söser is a PhD researcher at the Institute of Railway Systems Engineering and Traffic Safety at the Technical University of Braunschweig (TUBS). After an apprenticeship as mechanical engineer at the Austrian Federal railways (ÖBB), Simon Söser worked in various positons in the railway sector (e.g. Internships in Austria, Croatia and Germany). Simon holds a Master degree in Railway Infrastructure Technology from the University of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten, Austria. He was also involved in the Ceneri base tunnel project in Switzerland.
