On 4 July 2017, TRAIL PhD researcher Nikola Besinovic will defend his PhD thesis ‘Integrated Capacity Assessment and Timetabling Models for Dense Railway Networks’ at Delft University of Technology. His defence is public, and you are invited to join.

Moreover, on the occasion of his public defence, TRAIL and TU Delft have set up a seminar on: Challenges in Railway Operations Planning.

The planning of railway operations has many challenges, such as designing good timetables that enable efficient logistics and heavy passenger flows over complex networks. Prof. Anita Schöbel reconsiders the typical sequential railway planning process of line planning, timetabling and vehicle scheduling that leads to vehicle schedules that are often costly to operate. She explains how vehicle scheduling issues can already be included in the line planning and timetabling stages to guarantee lines that correspond to good vehicle routes. Prof. Lei Nie presents the characteristics and operational performance of China’s high speed railway network, and discusses three main challenges to its operation: capacity shortage for some corridor lines, the connection plan for large numbers of transferring passengers, and constructing a cyclic timetable for this large-scale network.
