On 3 November 2014 TRAIL PhD student Yihui Wang successfully defended her thesis ‘Optimal Trajectory Planning and Train Scheduling for Railway Systems’ at Delft University of Technology.

Short summary
Due to the increasing energy prices and environmental concerns, energy-efficiency has become one of the key objectives for railway systems. Moreover, the passenger demands in urban rail transit systems keep on growing. This thesis presents mathematical models and solution approaches for optimal trajectory planning of railway systems and for passenger-demand-oriented train scheduling of urban rail transit systems aimed at shortening passenger travel times and reducing energy consumption.
