8. Transport technology

This chapter is about transport technology. The transport system is highly technical, consisting of numerous technical artifacts such as cars, lorries, trucks, airplanes, many different kinds of infrastructures, and so forth. This chapter explains why it is difficult to innovate the system using evolutionary economics and a political-economy model. Specifically,  three technical innovations are treated in this chapter: alternative powertrains and fuels; Intelligent Transport systems, and vehicle-sharing systems that involve sophisticated ICT.
