2. The transport system and its effects on accessibility, the environment, safety, health and well-being: an introduction – Bert van Wee

Chapter 2 explains how the chapters of parts 1 and 2 of the book are connected, making use of a conceptual framework that makes explicit how the transport system shapes travel behaviour and impacts on accessibility, the environment, safety, health and well-being. Key components of the conceptual model are the needs and desires of people, the locations between which they travel, and transport resistance (time, costs, effort), travel behaviour, technologies used and driving behaviour.
